How to Change the Rollers in a Front Load Dryer From Sears

Torn clothing, excessive squeaking or a loud banging noise when the dryer is operating are signs that your Sears front-load dryer drum support rollers are worn and need replacing. The rollers help support the drum at the dryer’s rear and keep the drum from sagging. A sagging drum creates a pinch point between the back bulkhead and the drum’s exterior, allowing your clothes to get caught in the seam along the back of the drum. Replace the rollers to reduce the noise and stop tearing your clothes.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power supply to your Sears dryer by either unplugging the unit from the wall outlet or opening the breaker inside the main panel.

    • 2

Insert a putty knife into the bottom seam below the dryer door about 4 inches in from each side. Twisting the putty knife slightly releases the clips holding the bottom panel onto the front of the Sears dryer. Pull the bottom panel away from the dryer exposing the hex-head screws holding the front door panel onto the dryer.

    • 3

Snap the two plastic end caps off each side of the dryer control console. Remove the two Phillips screws beneath the end caps holding the console to the dryer’s top panel.

    • 4

Rotate the dryer console up and away from the dryer exposing the hex-head screws holding the top panel onto the dryer cabinet. The console is hinged to the dryer’s back and rests against the back panel.

    • 5

Remove the hex-head screws from the dryer’s top panel with a nut driver. Slide the top panel towards the dryer’s front and remove it from the dryer cabinet.

    • 6

Remove the two Phillips screws from the dryer cabinet’s top right corners. Remove the two hex-head screws from the left and right side of the dryer cabinet front panel beneath the dryer door.

    • 7

Note the location of the wire connections on the front door panel. Disconnect the wires and set the front panel aside.

    • 8

Remove the dryer drum belt from the idler pulley and the motor pulley. Reach beneath the dryer drum and push the idler pulley towards the drum releasing the tension. Unhook the belt from the idler pulley and the motor pulley.

    • 9

Grasp the dryer drum belt in one hand and use it as a handle helping lift the dryer drum up and out of the dryer cabinet. Inspect the dryer drum belt for wear and consider replacing the belt while the unit is disassembled.

    • 10

Locate the two rollers on the Sears dryer’s rear bulkhead. Use snap-ring pliers to remove the snap-rings holding the rollers onto the bulkhead. Pull the fiber washers from the shafts, and then pull the original rollers off the shafts.

    • 11

Wipe the shaft clean with an old rag, then place one or two drops of turbine oil onto the metal shaft. Thread the rollers onto the shafts, and then place the fiber washers onto the shafts.

    • 12

Replace the snap-rings onto the rollers to hold the rollers onto the shafts. Reassemble the Sears dryer reversing the disassembly steps.
