How to Fix a GE Model WSM2420DWW Washing Machine That Won't Stop Filling

General Electric uses a sightly unconventional design for the Spacemaker WSM2420DWW appliance combo, with the front-loading dryer resting above the top-loading washer. However, the basic mechanical functions and features that are found in the washer section, such as water control valves and the use of gravity, are nearly universal across other washer appliance brands. If a washer part or accessory is out of place or malfunctioning, then the water cannot behave and fill the tub as it normally should. You can troubleshoot the five areas that concern filling the washer with water, and then attempt to fix most of the minor problems on your own.

Stop or cancel a cycle in the GE washer if it is currently active. Access the back area of the GE washer that is against the wall. If you have to pull or push the washer away from the wall, ask for assistance. Also, be sure not to move the washer so fast and aggressively that you damage the pipes and valves.

Find the faucet in the back of the washer that controls the flow of fresh washing and rinsing water into the machine. Make sure the faucet is not completely turned off or turned to the point of choking the supply of water. If the water flows too slowly into the washer, it can seem like it will never stop filling.

Check the water hose for being bent or having kinks that are constricting the flow of water. Carefully straighten the hose.

    • 4

Inspect the screen inside the water valve. Start by turning off the water faucet. Use pliers or your hand to unscrew the water hose that fills the washer. Look at the screen that covers the diameter of the opening. Clear any debris that might be clogging the screen as the washer attempts to fill with water. Screw the hose back on, making sure it is tight. Turn the faucet back to the on position.

Use a watch or clock to personally time the total duration of the cycle. The "Regular," "Delicates" and "Permanent" press cycles can last from 12 to 16 minutes. However, total time does not include fill times, meaning a regular cycle of 16 minutes could arbitrarily last close to 30 minutes more or less. The factors that affect fill times include water pressure in your home and the selected water level on the washer's control panel. Turn the "Load Size" knob to select "Small" or "Medium" instead of "Large," to lower the water level, decreasing fill time. For water pressure issues, minimize household water use when running the washer, avoiding such activities as using the dishwasher or taking a shower.

Measure the height of the standpipe in the back of the GE washer, from top to bottom. The top of the pipe should measure 30 inches from the floor. A lower clearance may cause the water in the tub to flow back out of the washer. If the standpipe is under the recommended 30 inches, then you will need to install the appropriate-sized standpipe yourself or contact a plumber.
