How to Remove a Kenmore Elite Calypso Pump

The Kenmore Elite is a washing machine manufactured by Whirlpool using the company's Calypso design. The appliance uses a drain pump inside the cabinet near the back to pump out water from the tub at mid-cycle and before the final rinse. Removing the pump to replace the part or to check for clogs takes less than an hour using basic tools. A small amount of spilled water is normal with this repair project.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Kenmore power cord and close the two water taps on the wall behind the appliance. The knob on each tap turns to the right to shut off the water.

    • 2

Unscrew the two hoses on the back of the Kenmore Elite washer using pliers.

    • 3

Squeeze the clamp on the drain hose where it attaches to the back of the Kenmore washer, using pliers. Pull off the hose.

    • 4

Remove the bolts around the edges of the back plate, using the nut driver. Pull off the plate. The water pump is on the left side of the Kenmore Elite washer where it attaches to the drain hose.

    • 5

Disconnect the wires from the pump on the left side by pulling the plug connected to the pump.

    • 6

Squeeze the clamps one at a time on the two hoses attached to the pump, using pliers. Pull off each hose and lower it into the bucket to catch water.

    • 7

Take out the screws holding the pump to the bracket inside the Kenmore Elite washer. Now you can remove the pump from the washer to repair it, inspect it for clogs, or replace it.
