How to Remove End Caps From an Old Sears Dryer

Chances are, your old Sears Kenmore dryer will need work at some point. If you're ambitious enough to do your own repairs -- whether you are replacing the timer, changing a belt or fixing a switch -- one of the first steps is often removing the end caps. Once removed, you'll be able to access the console and open the cabinet. If you're not sure what end caps are, look at your dryer. On top of the cabinet along the back is a control panel, or console, where you'll find the timer and start button. On each end of the console, there is a piece that covers the sides and keeps it attached to the rest of the dryer with screws. These pieces are the end caps.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dryer or shut off its gas supply.

    • 2

Locate the screw near the upper back of each end cap. Depending on how old your Sears dryer is, it may be visible, or, if the end caps are plastic, it may be hidden. Pull the end cap to the side if you don't see a screw to expose it.

    • 3

Remove the end caps screws with a Philips-head screwdriver. Turn the screwdriver counterclockwise to loosen the screws.

Grasp the left end cap and pull it to the left. The tabs in the end cap should line up with the holes in the cabinet under the console. Lift the end cap straight up to remove it. Repeat with the right side end cap, but pull it to the right before lifting it off.
