How to Replace the Front Felt Seal of a GE Dryer

Pull your dryer far enough away from the wall to reach the electrical outlet servicing the unit. Unplug the GE's power cord from the wall outlet.

Open the door on the front of the dryer and remove the screws at the top of the opening with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Lift the top panel and rotate it back away from the GE's cabinet. Allow the panel to rest against the wall behind the dryer.

Remove the screws along the top edge of the inside of the dryer's cabin with the screwdriver. Lift the front panel and remove it from the dryer. Set the front panel aside.

Reach below the dryer's drum and press the idler pulley to the right. The pulley and motor shaft are used to guide the belt to spin the drum. Force the pulley to the right to relieve the tension on the belt.

Remove the belt from the pulley and motor shaft.

Lift the drum from the inside of the dryer's cabinet and set it on the floor with the front edge facing upward.

Find a piece of the dryer's felt seal that is large enough for you to grab with your fingers. The old seal will likely be worn and missing in some places. Use a piece that you can grab to pull the remaining pieces of the seal from the rim of the dryer's drum.

Scrape the smaller pieces left behind from the drum's rim with a flat screwdriver or putty knife.

Apply a layer of high temperature adhesive to the outside of the drum's rim.

Place the new felt seal onto the drum's rim. Hold each section of the seal in place for a moment to ensure a secure bond before moving on to fixing the rest of the seal around the drum's rim.

Let the drum sit for 20 minutes while the adhesive dries.

Grab the drum with one hand and grip the belt with the other hand and guide it into the dryer's cabinet. Rest the drum onto the guide rollers in the back of the GE's cabinet.

Return to the idler pulley and motor shaft. Force the pulley to the right by hand and loop the hanging belt back around the pulley and motor shaft. Release the pulley so that it may return tension to the belt.

Replace the front panel and screws. Rotate the top panel back into place and replace the screw in the dryer's front opening with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Close the dryer's front door.

Plug the GE unit into the wall outlet and slide the dryer back into place against the wall.
