How to Fix a Maytag Neptune Washer Making a Roaring Sound During the Spin Cycle

The Maytag Neptune front-loading washer uses a motor to drive the tumbler or drum. This component has to increase its speed considerably when transitioning to the spin cycle. Many factors affect spin speed, but garment weight and the amount of moisture that needs extraction largely influence this cycle. Before you attempt to fix what seems to be a problem because of excess roaring noises, you can do some initial troubleshooting to determine if the spin cycle's sounds are deemed normal by the manufacturer.

Instructions

    • 1

Start a load of laundry using your regular and preferred settings. This allows you to hopefully recreate the scenario of the "roaring sound" in the spin cycle and then make a diagnosis. Monitor the lighted indicators on the control panel as the washer advances to the spin cycle. This can take several minutes.

    • 2

Look at the "Fabrics" section of the control panel. If you chose the "Cotton Sturdy" option, the Neptune washer will spin at one of its highest speeds, potentially emitting a roaring sound. Cotton Sturdy is necessary for very thick fabrics and garments, such as bath towels and denim jeans. You might consider using lower fabric settings, where applicable, such as the Delicates or Wrinkle Free options that use gentle and reduced spin speeds.

    • 3

Find the "Options" section on the control panel. If you selected the "Faster Spin" setting in the Max Extract section, then that could be the cause of the roaring sound. Max Extract is not available on all models, but if you do have this option, try using it only on heavy blankets and thick towels.

Listen for the motor to gradually reduce its spin speed after it has reached the top speed. This is the washer trying to automatically achieve the best performance.

    • 5

Wait while the Neptune washer tries to automatically adjust the spin speed for an out-of-balance load. In doing so, the motor will make drastic changes in speed, from fast to slow, attempting to redistribute the load on its own. If the washer seems to still be out of balance, you can manually interrupt the cycle by pressing the "Start/Pause" button. Open the door and redistribute or remove some clothes. Close the door and press "Start/Pause" again. The cycle will resume in about 30 seconds or less.
