How to Fix a Banging Dryer

Pencils, coins and other small objects can fall through holes in a clothes dryer’s drum and into the blower housing. This can cause an annoying banging noise during dryer operation. In most cases, you can access and clean out the blower yourself using common household tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dryer to prevent electric shock.

    • 2

Remove the dryer’s lint trap. Unscrew and remove any screws next to the lint filter.

    • 3

Insert a flat-tipped screwdriver into the gap at the front top of the dryer to release the retaining clips. Lift and remove the top of the dryer.

    • 4

Using a ratchet, loosen and remove the screws securing the dryer’s back panel. Gently pull off the back panel. You may need to pull out additional wires in order to do this. Write down the locations and colors of each wire for future reference.

Unscrew and remove the screws used to secure the blower housing. Pull out the housing as far as possible and use your hands to remove lint and any objects.

Replace the blower housing, back panel, top panel and lint trap. The dryer is now ready to use.
