My Maytag LAT8824AAE Is Not Draining

The Maytag LAT8824AAE is a top load washing machine no longer manufactured by Maytag. If the washing machine is not draining water out of the tub, there are several potential reasons, many of which can be resolved by the owner. Equip yourself with a wrench and some clean rags to help troubleshoot the drain issue -- but remember that there are some problems that will require professional service to repair.
  1. Washer Operation

    • The Maytag washer has a lid switch detector that stops the washer if the lid is not fully closed. Open the washing machine lid and locate the door latch on the middle of the left side of the door. There should be a small plastic lever that latches into a slot on the washer when the lid is closed. Try to open and close the washer lid to see the lid latches shut, which should be accompanied by an audible click. Clean the lid latch with a clean, damp cloth if the latch seems stuck in place or does not click shut. if the door latch does not work even after being cleaned, the switch itself may be failing. Contact Maytag for assistance, as there is a door switch electrical connection that may need to be serviced

    Drain Hose Obstruction

    • The drain hose is the likely issue when the Maytag washing machine won’t drain. Disconnect power to the washing machine and, using a wrench, disconnect the drain hose from the rear of the washing machine after putting towels down under the hose. Look inside for obstructions and clear as needed, shaking the hose vigorously to remove items or debris. If there still seems to be an obstruction in the hose, flush the hose with water, keeping the other end of the drain hose in the drain facility or standpipe so the water can drain out. Reconnect the drain hose to the washing machine and tighten. Remember to keep the drain hose straight when reconnecting the hose to the washing machine. Lower the drain hose if the hose is installed more than 96 inches up from the floor as this can allow water to flow back into the washing machine instead of draining out correctly.

    Oversudsing

    • A suds lock feature will occur if the washing machine fills with too much soap and water, which is caused by overuse of detergent. If the suds lock feature engages, the washing machine will stop until the situation is resolved. Start a new wash cycle without any additional detergent to help rinse away the soap and drain the water in the tub caused by too much soap. For future loads of laundry, try switching to a lower-sudsing detergent and measure out detergent amounts for each load.

    Repair Necessary

    • If the washing machine still does not drain after cleaning out the drain hose and verifying that the lid is latching completely, call Maytag for service. Other potential issues that may be keeping the washer from draining include problems with the drain pump and the pump pulley, both of which are only accessible by taking apart the washing machine. The drain pump can get clogged with small clothing items like socks or objects that fall from pockets like keys or coins. If the washing machine is not spinning or draining, the wash pump pulley could be frozen, which means that the pump will need to be replaced.
