How to Diagnose a Squeaking Sound on a Maytag Atlantis Washer

The Maytag Atlantis washer is a top-loading machine that can experience noise problems the same as any other washing machine. As with all washers, some amount of noise is both normal and expected. If you encounter a squeaking noise that's either new or unusual, it might be something that you can troubleshoot and fix all on your own.

Inspect the legs of the washer to confirm that the rubber feet are installed. If not, this may be the source of the sound. They just push into the bottom of the legs to help stabilize the machine.

Lower the speed of the wash cycle by selecting the gentle cycle. If you notice that the squeaking sound is gone when you do this, it may be a normal noise for the higher speed cycles.

Step on the floor around the washer to determine if the floor is weak. If it is weak, this may be the cause of the squeaking. Putting a piece of plywood under the washer will create a stronger surface and possibly eliminate the squeaking. You may need a friend to assist you in getting the plywood under the washer. The plywood should be big enough to go under both the dryer and washer so that they are the same height. Measure the floor to determine the needed size.

Push on the washer in the corners to determine if it's sitting unevenly. If so, it should rock or tip back and forth. When a washer is not level, it can cause all sorts of noises, including squeaking, because it vibrates and rattles in place during the wash cycle. The legs of the washer are adjustable. Use a wrench to change the height of the legs and get the machine level. You may need a friend to assist you.
