How to Replace the Door Latch on a Whirlpool Duet

Whirlpool Duet washing machines have a door latch on the right side of the door jamb that locks the washer door closed during the wash cycle. The door must remain locked to ensure that the door cannot be opened during the wash cycle, which may result in a large amount of water flowing from the wash tub and onto your floor. The door latch has a sensor in it that detects the position of the door. If the sensor fails, it will likely be unable to lock the door or will not detect that the door is closed. In either of these scenarios, you must remove the latch and install a new one to resume using your Whirlpool Duet washing machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the Duet's power source by either unplugging it from the wall outlet or turning off the breaker in your home's service panel.

    • 2

Open the door and pry off the spring clamp which surrounds the door boot seal.

    • 3

Pull the right side of the boot seal off of the side of the door to gain access to the door latch, located behind the door jamb.

    • 4

Remove the mounting screws from the front of the door jamb, located above and below the door latch.

    • 5

Insert your hand behind the door jamb and grasp the latch. Lift the latch and then pull it away from the washing machine frame.

    • 6

Transfer the two wire connectors connected to the rear of the old door latch and connect them to the new door latch. Then disconnect the wire connectors, depress the tab and pull the connector straight off of the latch.

    • 7

Install the new door latch and secure it using the two mounting screws.

    • 8

Move the boot seal back into position and then reinstall the spring clamp to hold the seal in place.

    • 9

Close the washer door and restore the appliance's power connection.
