How to Replace or Repair the Belt on a GE Profile Dryer

GE Profile dryers are residential, large-capacity appliances with durable, stainless steel drums and multiple drying cycle options. When the dryer powers on but the drum doesn't spin, troubleshooting the belt is the surest way to get your GE Profile dryer working again. If the belt has just come free of the track, you can simply move it back into place. However, if the belt is broken or worn, you'll have to replace it rather than repair it. Fortunately, repairing or replacing the belt in a GE Profile dryer are simple and straightforward appliance repairs.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet. Turn the gas supply valve to the "Off/Closed" position before beginning your repairs if you have a GE Profile gas dryer.

    • 2

Insert a putty knife or flat-blade screwdriver into the space below the top dryer panel. Locate the two metal tabs that hold the top panel to the rest of the dryer cabinet. Press on the tabs with the putty knife or flat-blade screwdriver until they release. Fold the top dryer panel back and rest it against the wall.

    • 3

Insert the putty knife or screwdriver into the space above the bottom toe panel. Locate the two metal tabs approximately 6 inches in from either side of the panel. Apply pressure to the clips until they release and the panel comes free. Set the removed toe panel to the side.

    • 4

Loosen the two screws at the bottom of the front dryer panel, but don't remove them completely. Locate and remove the corresponding screws at the top of the panel. Set the removed screws aside and pull the top of the front panel toward you to gain better access to the dryer drum.

    • 5

Examine the dryer belt for damage such as cracks or tears. Guide the belt back into the belt track if it is still in good condition. Remove the belt if it is worn or broken; slip a new belt over the drum and move it into the belt track.

Thread the belt through the idler and motor pulley assemblies at the bottom of the dryer cabinet. Lift the idler pulley, thread the belt through it and loop it around the motor. Release the idler pulley to set the tension of the belt.
