How to Fix the Belt on a GE Washer

The belt on a GE washing machine is often the first thing that you'll need to replace. The belt moves the entire time you are using the washer, which leads to wear and breakage. The GE washer's belt wraps around three pulleys, located on the transmission, the motor and the clutch inside the washer. It should take you under an hour to replace your GE washing machine belt. The job is worth the time you put into it, though, as paying an appliance repairman can be expensive.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your washing machine. Pull it out so you can get behind it and access the panel on the back. If there is not enough room to crawl behind your washer, turn the washer around for easier access to the back panel.

    • 2

Detach the screws holding the back panel to the washing machine. Remove the back panel and place it somewhere out of your way.

    • 3

Loosen the coupler clamp with a screwdriver. The coupler clamp is located on the left side of the GE washer, next to the water pump.

    • 4

Push the coupler out of the way of the washing machine belt. You must move it far enough that you can reach into the machine easily.

    • 5

Pull the belt out of the washer. Push the machine up so it leans against a wall, giving you access to the bottom of your washer.

    • 6

Place the new belt around your washer's transmission and clutch pulleys. Locate the bolts holding the machine's motor in place.

    • 7

Loosen the motor bolts with a socket wrench. Do not completely remove the bolts, just loosen them enough so you can slide the washer's motor forward far enough to reach the motor's pulley.

    • 8

Wrap the belt around the motor pulley. Move the motor back into place and tighten all three bolts.

    • 9

Set the washing machine back down on the floor. Push the coupler clamp back into place and tighten it back down with a screwdriver.

    • 10

Reattach the back panel with the screws you removed earlier. Put the washer back in its place and plug it into the electrical outlet.
