Troubleshooting a GE Washer Agitator

GE Appliances offers a number of different washing machine models. Several include traditional top loading machines, which use an agitator to spin the laundry in the machine after it fills with water. If your washing machine isn’t spinning or turning on, there are several things you can check yourself, before calling the appliance repair person. If you are fortunate, a little troubleshooting might be all you need to correct the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the GE washing machine’s cord and make sure you have it securely plugged into a working electric outlet. Test the water values going to the machine, to make sure you have both the hot and cold water turned all the way on.

    • 2

Press POWER if the control panel doesn’t appear to be working. It is probably just asleep. After you wake up the control panel, you can set your controls and start the machine by pressing START.

    • 3

Press START a second time if there seems to be slow water pressure.

    • 4

Unplug the GE washing machine, and let it set for two minutes before plugging back in, and then press POWER. This can help if the electronics need resetting.

    • 5

Check your load. The problem might be overloading the machine, or an imbalanced load, where all the laundry shifts to one side.

    • 6

Recognize normal operating sounds. It is normal for the GE washing machine to repeatedly start and stop. You will hear the sound of running water, a clicking sound during the wash cycle, humming while the washer drains, pinging during the rinse and drain cycle, and water sloshing.
