My Maytag A112 Washer Is Leaking As It Fills

First available for sale in 1989, the Maytag A112 model is a top-loading washing machine. As you use your washer, it is not uncommon to encounter leaks. For a leak when the washer is filling, you do not need any plumbing expertise to do some troubleshooting.
  1. Hose Connections

    • As your washer is filling, look behind the washer where the hoses from the faucets connect to the back of the washer. Check for leaks at the hose connections. This is a common source of leaks when filling. Twist at the connections to confirm that the hoses are tightly connected to the washer. Each hose should have washers and a gasket holding it in place. If you don’t have these or they are damaged, visit a local home improvement store to replace them.

    Large Load

    • Putting too much laundry in the washer can lead to leaks as the washer fills. This is because the laundry is stacked too high, which causes water to bounce off it. The same thing can happen if the laundry is unevenly distributed so it is stacked higher under where the water comes in. Solve this problem by removing items from an overloaded washer or redistributing items in an unbalanced washer.

    Not Level

    • If your washer is not sitting level, water can bounce off the washer basket as it fills. The machine should not rock from front to back or side to side, which is a sign that it is not level. The washer has adjustable legs that you can shorten or lengthen to get the washer level. A wrench is needed to loosen the nuts on the legs to make the adjustments. Once made, use the wrench again to tighten the nuts.

    Overfilling

    • Your washer may be leaking when it fills because it is overfilling. You can test this by lifting up the lid of the washer and powering it on and off repeatedly around 20 times. The point of this is to see whether the water stops filling in the tub each time you stop it. If it does not stop, overfilling is the problem. Overfilling is often the result of an internal component that has gone bad, such as the water level hose, water level control or water valve. A Maytag repair technician can access these internal components to diagnose which is faulty and replace it for you.
