How to Fix a Kenmore Dryer That Does Not Shut Off

The Kenmore dryer operates by monitoring the moisture level of your current load and continues to run until your clothes are nearly dry to prevent overdrying. An imbalanced load, which is a mixture of too many heavy or lightweight fabrics, can interrupt the dryer's ability to detect moisture and results in longer drying times. Continuous drying of lightweight or delicate clothing damages the fabric and wastes energy but is correctable through load adjustment. A dirty lint trap also affects your dryer's ability to distribute heat through the clothing and increases drying time. Once adjusted, your dryer automatically turns off when the clothing is 80 percent dry.

Instructions

    • 1

Touch "Control Lock" on the front of your dryer's control panel until the control lock light turns off. Press "Start/Pause" to interrupt the drying cycle.

    • 2

Pull open the dryer's door and lift out the lint screen. It is located at the bottom of the door's opening and requires thorough cleaning after every drying cycle to maintain the dryer's airflow.

    • 3

Wipe off excess lint from the lint screen, and wet the cleaning brush under hot water. Squeeze 1 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid soap onto the brush, and scrub the screen to eliminate residue from it.

    • 4

Wipe the lint screen dry with a soft, lint-free towel or cloth and insert the screen back into the dryer's lint trap.

    • 5

Touch the clothing in the dryer to determine its dryness. Remove dry articles of clothing from the dryer and shut the dryer's door.

    • 6

Push "Start/Pause" to resume the drying process.
