How to Mount a Dryer Receptacle on a Foundation Wall

Proper installation of a dryer receptacle begins with attaching it securely to a wall. Installing a dryer receptacle to a foundation wall requires using a surface mount plug because most foundation walls are solid. The most common method of installation is to attach it using concrete fasteners or anchors, which require pre-drilling pilot holes with a hammer drill and masonry bit. It is important to place the dryer receptacle in a safe location and to follow local building codes during installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a suitable position for the dryer receptacle. A common location is to center the receptacle behind the dryer about 30 inches above the floor. Be aware of any water or electrical lines to avoid damaging them during installation.

    • 2

Disassemble the dryer receptacle. Remove the outer cover by removing the screw with a slotted or Phillip's head screwdriver and set it aside.

    • 3

Place the dryer receptacle in the desired position on the wall. Mark the position of the dryer's three mounting holes on the wall with a pencil.

    • 4

Equip a hammer drill with an appropriate sized masonry bit. The size of the bit depends on the size of the cement fasteners you use. Most manufacturers include the appropriate sized bit with the fasteners.

    • 5

Place the drill on one of the marks and drill until you reach an adequate depth for the fastener. For example, if you use a 2-inch bit, drill the hole to a depth of 2 1/4 inches. Repeat this step for the remaining two holes.

    • 6

Place the dryer receptacle against the wall and align the mounting holes with the drilled holes in the wall. Place a cement fastener into one of the holes and tighten with the appropriate screwdriver or screw gun. Repeat this step for the remaining two holes and replace the receptacle cover until you are ready to make wiring connections.
