How to Grease a Kenmore Dryer

Dryers have large drums which are what hold the clothes while being dried. A small motor powers the drum and allows it to rotate. The motor connects to a rubber belt that itself connects to a small gear that moves the drum. If your Kenmore dryer is squeaking or squealing it may need to be greased. Do this as soon as you notice the noise; if you allow it to continue the bearings may dry out and break.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 5/16 inch socket wrench

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dryer from the power outlet. Remove the lint filter. Depending on your Kenmore model the filter will either be on the top of the dryer, just inside the door, or on the back of the door.

    • 2

Remove the screws located under the lint filter compartment. Pull the top of the dryer cabinet forward and note how it unclips from the frame. Lift the dryer top towards the back of the dryer to reveal the internal components. If the dryer has a separate bottom panel on the front, then simply use a putty knife to pry the bottom panel off.

    • 3

Locate the dryer motor in the lower right side of the housing next to the dryer drum. Locate the small wheel gear next to the motor. A belt will be wrapped around it. Locate the small bearing in the middle of the small wheel.

    • 4

Apply a few drops of sewing machine oil to the bearing. Try to get a few drops on both the front and back of the bearing.

    • 5

Put the bottom panel or front panel back on. Reattach the screws and insert the lint filter. Plug the dryer back in.
