How to Get Something Out of the Vent on a Cabrio Dryer

Whirlpool Cabrio dryers, like models from rival companies, have a metal vent that runs from the back of the appliance, through the nearest wall to the outside of your home. Any foreign object in the dryer vent poses a fire risk; dried balls of lint, stray dryer sheets and even birds nest can dry out and catch fire with catastrophic consequences. The U.S. Fire Administration calculates an average of 15 people are killed each year by fires started in dryer venting, many as a direct result of failing to carry out routine maintenance.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the dryer away from the wall, if necessary, to gain access to the metal venting. Locate the screws on top of each metal clamp joining the vent sections together. The precise number of sections depends on the distance your dryer is installed from an exterior wall. There are usually at least three pieces.

    • 2

Loosen the screw of each clamp and pull the sections of the vent apart, including the pieces at the back of the dryer and the exhaust hood. Set the pieces to one side ready for cleaning.

    • 3

Vacuum out each section and brush away any build up of lint or dust on the walls of the vent. Push the pieces of the vent back together and tighten the clamps to restore the dryer for use.

Run the dryer on empty and place a hand over the exhaust pipe outside your home. You should feel a steady stream of air if the vent is clear and working properly. Remember to clean the dryer's lint screen at the start or end of each cycle.
