How Much Space for a Washing Machine?

It's vital to measure your space before you consider buying a new washing machine. When doing so, there are a number of facts you'll need to consider. It's not simply a question of identifying a space a new machine will slot into precisely. It will need space around it for both mechanical and practical reasons.
  1. Width

    • The hardware store Lowe's recommends that you allow an inch on either side of your washing machine to facilitate ventilation. Without this gap, there's a chance your machine could overheat and break down. This is particularly important if you plan to install your new machine on a carpeted floor. Ventilation from beneath is impeded by carpets or rugs.

    Height

    • If you're buying a top loader, make sure you have a clearance of at least 20 inches above your machine to access its drum. If you're fitting a front loader under a worktop or in a cabinet base, it's wise to leave an inch clearance at the top of your machine to aid ventilation and access.

    Depth

    • Add at least six inches to the depth of your machine to accommodate water inlet pipes, drainage, and vents at the back, and door clearance at the front. You should check the dimensions of the hook ups you're using to calculate the exact clearance you'll need at the back of your machine.

    Access

    • Make sure the location you have planned for your machine is within easy reach of power and water supplies and a drainage system. You should also consider ease of access to and from your machine. Make sure you have plenty of room to open your machine's door to put in and take out your laundry.
