How to Change the Door Direction on a Maytag Dryer

The door swing direction is reversible on many models of Maytag dryer. You might want to switch the door hinges to the opposite side of the appliance if the door strikes walls, cabinets or the door of the washing machine. The doors are mostly symmetrical except for the hinges and door handle, making them simple to reverse. Because each model of dryer is different, you might find some steps vary slightly when applied to your particular Maytag dryer.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a towel on the top of the dryer. This will be your work surface. Open the door and remove the bottom screws of each hinge. Loosen, but do not remove, the top screws. Lift the door upward and outward to remove it from the dryer. Place it outside-up on the towel and remove the remaining hinge screws.

    • 2

Remove the screws at the top, bottom and sides of the door. Carefully lift the outer panel of the door upward to separate it from the inside panel. Make sure the cardboard separator stays in place when the pieces come apart. Rotate the outer panel 180 degrees so the handle is on the opposite side.

    • 3

Reattach the hinges on the opposite side of the door to the handle; the largest screw hole on each hinge should be nearest the bottom. Fasten the five screws used to hold the inner and outer parts of the door back in place.

    • 4

Remove the screws holding the plastic retainer plugs in place on the opposite side of the door frame to where the hinges were originally attached. Move the plugs to the holes just vacated by the hinge and fasten them in place.

    • 5

Screw the lower screw of each hinge into the holes vacated by the plastic retainer plugs but do not tighten. Hang the door hinge on the lower screws and fully tighten the top ones in place. Tighten the lower screws last and test the door. It is now ready to swing in the opposite direction.
