What Is a Thermal Limiter Used For on a Dryer?

In 1998, clothes dryers caused 15,600 fires, which resulted in 20 deaths, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Modern dryers have safety features that minimize fire risk. Your dryer's thermal limiter is an important component of your dryer's safety.
  1. Thermal Limiter Use

    • Thermal limiters are safety devices available for both electric and gas dryers. When the dryer's temperature reaches a maximum set level, such as 220 degrees Fahrenheit, the dryer's heating element cuts off. This prevents overheating and fire.

    Troubleshooting

    • According to Frigidaire, if the dryer stops running in the middle of the cycle, the thermal limiter switch may be activated. This is available only on electric Frigidaire dryers. If this happens, you should call a service technician. The thermal limiter switch must be replaced once the problem is repaired.

    Safety Tips

    • Many fires can be prevented by following a few safety tips. Clean the lint filter after each load. If clothes are damp at the end of a normal cycle, this may indicate a blocked lint screen or exhaust duct. Clean behind and around the dryer to prevent lint buildup.

The U.S. Consumer Safety Product Commission recommends replacing plastic or foil accordion-type ducts with rigid or semirigid metal duct to maximize airflow. Check the outside vent when the dryer is running to be sure exhaust air is escaping. Clean the vent and exhaust duct periodically to prevent blockages.

    Warnings

    • Use caution when drying clothes soiled with volatile chemicals such as cooking oil or gasoline. Wash more than once to remove as much of the chemical as possible. Clothes should be hung to air-dry, but if this is not possible, dry on the lowest setting with a cool-down period at the end of the cycle.
