How to Troubleshoot the Pump on a Fisher Paykel Washing Machine

Fisher & Paykel manufactures a line of top-loading washing machines with water- and energy-saving modes, as well as a direct drive motor and automatic water level sensors. If the washing machine starts making a lot of noise during use or leaves water in the tub after the cycle is complete, the pump might be to blame. Troubleshooting the pump in a Fisher & Paykel washer requires taking the washer apart, so undertake this process only if you're confident in your ability to disassemble the machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect power to the Fisher & Paykel washing machine. Disconnect the hoses from the rear of the machine, and clear out the inlet screens. Check the hoses for clogs and clear as needed.

    • 2

Set a large towel or blanket on the floor, and carefully lower the washer face-down onto the soft blanket.

    • 3

Remove the two Philips head screws on the upper rear of the console. Lift the control panel off, then tip the console forward.

    • 4

Take out the screws along the perimeter that hold the back panel onto the washing machine. Lift the back panel off the washer.

    • 5

Locate the pump, which will be connected to several hoses. Label each hose and where the hoses connect to the pump, so you can reconnect them more easily later. Use a pair of pliers to clamp together the wire tabs on each hose, and push the clamp up the hose, then remove the hose.

    • 6

Use a screwdriver to lift up the metal clips that hold the cover plate on the pump assembly, and then lift off the cover and the impeller. Look at the impeller for any damage, and set the impeller aside. If the impeller is damaged or broken, the impeller and the pump will need to be replaced.

    • 7

Look inside the pump for objects that might be causing the problem, usually small socks, keys or other items. Grab and remove the items with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

    • 8

Rotate the pulley behind the pump manually. If the pulley does not turn easily, the pulley needs to be replaced. If the pump belt is damaged or broken, the belt will need to be replaced. Both the pump and the pulley can affect the performance of the pump.
