Unplug the GE washer power cord from the electrical outlet. Never attempt to service an appliance that still has power to it, even if the repair is not one that is electrical in nature. Pull the washing machine away from the wall so that you are able to get behind the appliance. Remove the six retaining screws from the back securing the top panel to the frame using a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the top from the machine and set it aside.
Pull the soap dispenser out of the front of the machine until it stops. Depress the clip in the back of the machine and remove the drawer from the opening. Remove the screws from the soap dispenser bracket using a Phillips screwdriver. Depress the clips on the control panel and pull it off the front of the machine. Unplug the wiring from the control panel and set it aside out of the way.
Lift the front of the GE washer off the floor and place a wooden block under it to prop it up. Remove the retaining screws from the bottom panel using a nut driver and pull the panel from the appliance. Remove the block from under the appliance and lower it to the floor. Open the washer door. Locate the screws on the right side securing the door latch and remove them using a Phillips screwdriver. Push the door latch into the machine.
Remove the outer door gasket spring by inserting a flat-tip screwdriver into the loop and pulling it off. Peel the gasket away from the outer perimeter of the door opening and push it inside the machine. Remove the four screws retaining the upper front panel to the GE washer using a nut driver. Pull the panel away from the washing machine frame and set it aside out of the way. Pull the white and black hose from the top of the washer gasket.
Loosen the retaining clamp on the inner part of the gasket using a nut driver. Insert a flat-tip screwdriver under the clamp and pull it away from the gasket. Grasp the gasket and pull it away from the washtub. Discard the old gasket. Lubricate the groove on the new gasket with liquid laundry detergent to make it easier to work the gasket onto the washtub. Make sure you put the gasket on with the openings for the black and white hoses at the top. The notch must line up with the arrow there.
Install the retaining clamp on the gasket and work it into the groove. Tighten the nut on the clamp using a nut driver. Insert the black and white hoses into the openings at the top of the gasket. Place the upper front panel on the GE washer frame and install the retaining screws using a nut driver. Reach into the washing machine between the frame and the front panel and insert the door latch into the opening. Install the retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
Press the door gasket onto the lip of the outer door perimeter, making sure it is secure in the groove. Install the outer gasket spring into the groove of the gasket making sure it is fully in the groove. You can use the flat-tip screwdriver to assist but be careful not to tear or gouge the new gasket. Raise the front of the machine and place the wood block under it to prop it up. Install the bottom panel on the machine frame and tighten the retaining screws using a nut driver.
Remove the block from under the GE washer and lower it to the floor. Place the control panel close enough to the washer so that you can reconnect the wiring harnesses to it. Snap the control panel in place on the machine. Install the retaining screws at the soap dispenser using a Phillips screwdriver. Insert the soap dispenser into the bracket and push it all the way in. Place the top on the washer and install the six retaining screws using a Phillips screwdriver.
Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet and push the washer back into place against the wall. Run the washing machine for a short cycle while it is empty and check the door and front of the washing machine thoroughly for leaking.
