How to Replace the Gasket for a Kenmore Front Load

Kenmore front loading washers need to have an airtight seal to prevent water and soap from leaking out the front of the unit and onto the floor. A leaky washer can damage tile as well as the subfloor, and can cause structural damage to the home; not to mention your clothes do not get clean. A gasket is installed between the washer door and the wash tub to prevent leaks from the washer. If the gasket is ripped or cracked from age or misuse, replacement is necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your Kenmore from the wall. This prevents shock while working on the machine.

    • 2

Pull the washer out from the wall.

    • 3

Remove the three screws from the top plate of the machine to release it. Pull up on the plate to remove it.

    • 4

Pull out the detergent tray from the front of the machine. Press down on the release button and pull out to remove it.

    • 5

Remove the three screws from the top of the control panel and the one screw from inside the detergent tray cavity. Pull out on the control panel. Pull on the connectors to release the control panel from the washer. Mark the connectors with masking tape so you remember how they were wired.

    • 6

Remove the screws from the door latch, and remove the latch from the machine.

    • 7

Slide the end of a flat-head screwdriver behind the wire at the door opening to remove it from the gasket.

    • 8

Remove the screws from the door cavity and pull on the front panel of the washer to remove it.

    • 9

Loosen the screw holding the gasket clamp onto the gasket. Pull out the gasket to remove it from the tub.

    • 10

Place the new gasket onto the tub, keeping the notch in the gasket facing up toward the ceiling.

Reassemble the washer in reverse order.
