How to Troubleshoot Blinking F & H on a Kenmore Elite Washer

When the letters "F" and "H" appear on your Kenmore Elite washer's LCD display, the cryptic message that follows seems almost implausible. More specifically, after the "HF" error code, you might see an extended description: "Water Inlet Problem -- No Water or Insufficient Water Supply." Your washer uses the same water supply as used throughout the rest of your home -- kitchen sink, bathroom shower, lawn sprinklers -- so you are befuddled that the machine is not receiving water. You can perform a few troubleshooting steps to remedy the "HF" code and get your Kenmore Elite functioning properly again.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "Pause/Cancel" button two times to cancel the current washing cycle.

    • 2

Unplug the washer's power cord from the electrical outlet in the wall. To avoid electrocution, be mindful of puddles of water on the floor that may have built up from water leaks around the washer. Dry your hands if they are wet. Alternatively, turn off the power to the washer using the switch in the circuit breaker box.

    • 3

Turn off the water supply at the faucets, which are usually recessed in a square compartment in the wall behind the Kenmore Elite washer. Unscrew the inlet hoses that connect the water faucets to the washer. There is a mesh screen inside the hose. Make sure it is not clogged.

    • 4

Uncurl the water hose if it is wound too many times, restricting water flow. Remove any kinks or bends in the hose that could be blocking water flow.

    • 5

Flex the hose, listening and feeling for chunks of ice blocking the flow of fresh water to the washer. Hold the hose vertically and try to shake the ice free from the inside of the tubing. You may need to pour warm or hot water behind the ice to melt the obstruction down enough to pass through the hose. Also, check the weather forecast for future freezing events, so you can take precautionary measures to protect the plumbing throughout your home, including that attached to the Kenmore Elite washer.

    • 6

Screw the hose back on and turn the faucets to the fully "On" position so water can freely flow to the washer.

    • 7

Restore power to the washer by plugging it back in or flipping the circuit breaker back on. Choose your cycle on the washer's control panel. Press "Start."

Contact Sears/Kenmore for service if the "HF" error reappears.
