How to Remove the Drain Pump in a GE HE Washer

GE offers an extensive line of high-efficiency, or HE, washers for residential customers. These washers contain an internal component known as a drain pump that pumps the dirty wash water from the tub at the end of each cycle. If the drain pump fails, the tub may drain slowly or not at all. Removing the drain pump from a GE high-efficiency washer is a straightforward process that can be completed in less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washer and switch the corresponding circuit breaker to the "Off" position to disconnect the power to the machine. Pull the washer 3 or 4 feet from the wall so that you can access its rear panel.

    • 2

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the four corner screws that secure the rear panel to the washer cabinet. Pull the panel off and set the removed components aside.

    • 3

Locate the drain pump assembly on the bottom right side of the washer cabinet. Remove the thin plastic cover that shields the drain pump; slide the cover straight down to clear the retaining clips.

    • 4

Squeeze the metal clamp on the drain hose and slide it back. Insert a small flat-head screwdriver under the edge of the hose and rock it back and forth to break the sealing compound. Remove the hose. Repeat the process to remove the second drain hose from the pump.

    • 5

Disconnect the wires attached to the drain pump. Pull firmly on the connector to detach it from the terminal.

    • 6

Remove the two Phillips screws that secure the drain pump and attached mounting plate to the floor of the washer. Set the removed screws aside.

    • 7

Locate and remove the two Phillips screws on the mounting plate to separate it from the drain pump component. Troubleshoot, repair or replace the removed drain pump.
