How to Install the Felt Seal on a Kenmore Dryer

The felt seal on a Kenmore dryer serves multiple purposes. The seal provides a safeguard to protect clothing during the drying cycle. The front felt seal occupies the space between the dryer's drum and the inside of the front panel. Clothing allowed to pass through the space can be lost or damaged. The seal maintains the temperature inside the drum and protects the inside of the dryer from damage that would occur if the metal drum and panel were able to make contact. Replace the seal when wear is noticed to protect your Kenmore dryer and your clothing.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the Kenmore dryer from the wall to allow yourself the space to reach the power cord. Unplug the dryer's cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Remove the lint filter screen from the top panel near the right corner of the dryer and set it aside. Remove the two screws from the filter's compartment opening with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 3

Place the flat-head screwdriver or putty knife into the space between the top panel and the front panel of the dryer. Pry the corners upward to release the spring clips holding the top panel in place.

    • 4

Lift the top panel and rotate it away from the dryer. Rest the panel on the wall behind the dryer or rotate it all the way so that it rests behind the dryer (space permitting).

    • 5

Disconnect the door switch wiring harness and allow the two wiring groups to hang freely inside the dryer's cabinet.

    • 6

Remove each of the two screws from the inside corners of the Kenmore's front panel with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Lift the front panel from the top edge and pull it away from the dryer. Set the panel aside.

    • 7

Reach into the bottom of the now-exposed dryer drum and press the idler pulley to relieve tension on the Kenmore's belt. Take the belt from the pulley and motor shaft and allow it to hang freely from the drum.

    • 8

Grab the drum by the top of the rim and the belt. Lift the drum from the inside of the dryer's cabinet and set it on the floor with the sealed side facing upward.

    • 9

Pry the remaining seal from the drum's rim with a flat-head screwdriver or putty knife. Pull the pieces of the seal from the rim by hand.

    • 10

Scrub the rim of the dryer with a scouring pad and warm, soapy water to remove dried adhesive and remnants of the old felt seal. Dry the rim with a towel.

    • 11

Apply the high-temperature adhesive to the outer edge of the drum's rim. Place the new seal around the rim, firmly pressing as you go to fix the seal to the rim.

    • 12

Leave the drum for at least 20 minutes so the adhesive dries.

    • 13

Lift the drum by the upper edge and belt and return it to the inside of the dryer's cabinet. Reach below the drum to loop the belt back around the idler pulley and motor shaft. Press the pulley inward to allow the belt to fit, then release the pulley to return tension to the belt.

    • 14

Replace the front panel onto the Kenmore's cabinet. Replace the two screws at the top onside corners of the front panel. Reconnect the door switch wiring harness.

    • 15

Rotate the upper panel back onto the top of the dryer's cabinet and press the two front corners to snap the panel back in place.

    • 16

Replace the two screws near the opening of the lint filter screen compartment. Replace the lint filter screen into the compartment.

    • 17

Plug the Kenmore dryer's power cord back into the wall outlet and slide the unit back into place against the wall.
