How to Change the Bellow on a Duet Washer

Whirlpool Duet washers are front-loading, energy-efficient, residential washing machines with multiple automatic washing cycles and temperature settings, and a noise reduction feature known as Quiet Wash. Duet washers use a rubber gasket component called a bellows to prevent water from spilling out of the door opening and onto the floor. Over time, the bellows can develop cracks that allow water to escape. Changing the bellows on a Duet washer can be done, though the process is rather extensive. If you're unfamiliar or uncomfortable with this type of appliance repair, consult a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the electrical cord and move the corresponding circuit breaker switch to the "Off" position to disconnect the power to the machine. Turn the water supply valve to the "Off/Closed" position.

    • 2

Move the washer 3 to 4 feet away from the wall so you can access the back of the appliance. Remove the three screws along the back edge of the top panel. Lift the panel off of the top of the washer and set it aside.

    • 3

Locate the detergent dispenser drawer to the left of the control console on the front of the machine. Pull the drawer out as far as it will go. Press the release button at the back of the drawer and remove the component. Remove the recessed screws on the dispenser drawer housing. Set the removed components to the side.

    • 4

Detach the wires connected to the back of the control console. Pull firmly on the connectors to free the wires; don't pull the wires themselves. Press on the locking tabs along the top and bottom edges of the control console with a flat-head screwdriver until they release. Set the control console aside with the other removed washer components.

    • 5

Remove the hex-head screws from the bottom edge of the toe panel. Pull the panel off of the front of the machine and place it to the side.

    • 6

Open the washer door. Use a small screwdriver to remove the retaining wire tension spring from the front of the bellows. Set the retaining wire tension spring aside; take care to avoid damaging the spring portion of the component.

    • 7

Peel the bellows back from the lip of the door opening to access the door switch assembly. Remove the door switch assembly screws with a T-20 Torx screwdriver; the number of screws varies by Whirlpool Duet model. Pull out the door switch assembly and disconnect the three wire connectors from the door switch terminals. Set the removed assembly and screws to the side.

    • 8

Close the washer door and remove the four hex-head screws from the corners of the front panel. Remove the front panel and lean it against the side of the machine.

    • 9

Rotate the bellows retaining clamp screw counterclockwise to loosen the clamp that secures the bellows to the front of the washer tub. Remove the clamp and bellows. Discard the old bellows, but reserve the clamp.

    • 10

Fit the replacement bellows around the front of the washer tub. Position the bellows so that the "weep holes" are at the bottom.
