How to Check a Magnetic Switch in a GE Washer

GE Appliances is a division of the General Electric Company that manufactures appliances for residential customers. GE washing machines feature a safety component, known as a lid switch, that prevents the appliance from agitating when the lid is open. Some GE washers use a magnetic lid switch component. If the magnetic lid switch is faulty, the washer may fail to agitate even when the lid is closed. You can perform a simple test to determine whether the magnetic lid switch on your GE washer is functioning properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Duct tape
  • Putty knife
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Digital multimeter

Instructions

    • 1

Open the lid of the washer. Check the top right-hand corner of the open lid for a small, plastic-coated magnetic component that's fastened to the lid with two screws. Replace the magnetic component if it is damaged or missing.

    • 2

Disconnect the GE washer from its power source. Unplug the washer from the wall outlet or move the corresponding circuit breaker switch to the "Off" position. Disrupt the gas supply to GE gas washers by turning the supply valve to the "Off/Closed" position.

    • 3

Close the washer lid. Secure the edges of the lid with duct tape to prevent it from opening when the top panel is raised.

    • 4

Slide a putty knife into the space below the washer's top panel. Locate the retaining clips approximately 4 inches in from the sides of the panel. Apply pressure to the clips with the tip of the putty knife until they release. Raise the top panel up and rest it against the wall behind the appliance.

    • 5

Locate the magnetic lid switch component on the underside of the raised top panel. Detach the two lid switch wires; pull firmly on the connectors with a pair of needle nose pliers to disconnect them from their terminals.

    • 6

Turn on the digital multimeter and set it to read RX1 resistance. Touch one multimeter probe to each of the lid switch terminals. A reading of "0" ohms indicates a properly functioning lid switch.
