How Can I Check to See if Something is Wrapped Around the Agitator in a Washing Machine?

The agitator in a washing machine is the part that sticks up in the middle. Most top-loading washing machines have them. During the washing and rinsing part of the cycle, the agitator rotates to stir up the clothes and move them through the water. Objects with long pieces such as laundry bags and pants or jackets with drawstrings can get wrapped around the agitator as it moves. If the washing machine starts making grinding or thumping noises, you should check for items wound around it.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait for the water to drain if the washing machine is running.

    • 2

Turn off the washing machine and open the lid.

    • 3

Put on your rubber gloves and slide your hands down the agitator. Move the clothes away from the agitator.

    • 4

Grab the wrapped item and unwind it from the agitator in the opposite direction the agitator normally moves. If you're not sure which direction the agitator turns, look at the spiral fin or fins on the agitator. They always move downward. If you can't unwrap the item from around the agitator, you will need to remove the agitator from the washing machine.

    • 5

Unscrew the cap on the agitator. On some models, the cap has a friction fit. Use a screwdriver to pry off the cap. There is usually a protective seal with a bolt or screw underneath. Remove the seal and unscrew the bolt or screw. Some washing machines do not use caps or screws. On these washing machines, the whole agitator is held in place by friction.

    • 6

Grasp the agitator near the top and twist it opposite the direction of motion. You may need to use some force to get it off the mounting post.

    • 7

Unwrap the item from around the agitator or mounting post and reinstall the agitator.
