How to Change a Whirlpool Door Switch

A Whirlpool washer has a door or lid switch. This switch tells the rest of the electrical system in the unit that the door is closed. If the door is not closed, the unit will not start up. A faulty door switch will prevent the washer from working, making it look as though the motor or the controls of the machine are broken. Replacing the lid switch is an inexpensive repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washer from the wall.

    • 2

Remove the screws from each end of the control panel. Lift up on the panel to remove it from the rest of the machine. Slide a putty knife between the control panel and the body, and push back on the control panel if it doesn't have screws.

    • 3

Pull forward on the cabinet body to remove it. Set the cabinet on its side on top of some towels to protect the paint.

    • 4

Remove the screw from the end of the green grounding wire.

    • 5

Remove the two screws from the switch body. Pull out on the wires to remove them from the grooves along the washer body.

    • 6

Feed the wire of the new switch along the channel in the washer body and secure the new switch with the mounting screws. Attach the grounding wire.

    • 7

Replace the cabinet body and the control panel. Plug in the unit and test the switch.
