How to Remove & Replace a Gasket in a GE Front Washer

If you notice that your GE front load washer is leaking around the front of the machine during the wash cycle, you may need to replace the washer gasket. The gasket keeps the machine sealed during the washing cycle while water circulates through the appliance. Over time, these gaskets can crack or otherwise fail. Removing and replacing a gasket in a GE washer involves dismantling the front panel of the machine so you can access to the gasket.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • Socket wrench and socket set
  • New washer gasket

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the GE front load washer from the socket to prevent accidental shock. Move the washer away from the wall, if needed, in order to reach the outlet.

    • 2

Turn off the water supply valves (both hot and cold) located at the rear of the washer.

    • 3

Loosen the screws at the top of the back of the washer with a screwdriver. Slide the top of the machine toward the back of the washer and lift it up and out of place.

    • 4

Remove the soap dispenser drawer by pulling it straight forward and out of the cabinet. Remove the screws on the inside of the drawer and the screws on the side of the washing machine with a screwdriver.

    • 5

Carefully lift the control panel, and place it on top of the washing machine. Don't pull the panel too far away from the cabinet, because it is still connected to the wiring harness. Carefully separate the plastic sockets on the wiring harness. Set the control panel aside.

    • 6

Remove the kick panel at the bottom of the GE washer by pressing in on the sides until the panel pops out of place.

    • 7

Open the door on the GE washer. Use a screwdriver to remove the screw holding the latch in place and the latch. Remove the screws around the face of the washer door.

    • 8

Insert a flat-blade screwdriver between the rubber gasket and the wire clip holding the rubber washer gasket in place. Gently lift the wire clip with the screwdriver until it comes off the rubber collar. Lift the collar on the gasket so it sticks outward.

    • 9

Close the washer door. Remove the screws on the top and bottom corners of the washer front panel. Pull the front panel off the machine.

    • 10

Locate for the clamp holding the interior portion of the gasket on the washer tub. Loosen the clamp with a socket wrench. Pull the clamp off the gasket.

    • 11

Pull the existing gasket out of the GE washer.

    • 12

Insert a new gasket into the washer, with the collar in the raised position. Secure the gasket in the washer tub with the clamp.

    • 13

Replace the door, taking care not to mash the collar down out of position. Secure it in place at the four corners with screws.

    • 14

Open the washer door. Fold the collar back down into position around the opening. Secure it with the retaining wire. Replace the door latch and front panel screws.

    • 15

Plug the wiring harness back into the control panel. Replace the control panel and secure it with screws. Press the bottom panel back into position. Slide the soap drawer back into the top of the washer.

    • 16

Replace the top cover and secure it.

    • 17

Turn the water supply back on. Plug the GE washer back into the socket.
