Removal of the Knob on a GE Clothes Washer

Placing your clothes in the washer and setting the dials to the appropriate load size, temperature and cycle may be a routine household task -- unless the knob breaks or malfunctions. Removing and replacing the knob yourself requires basic tools and no technical knowledge.
  1. Removing Selector Knobs

    • GE washing machines have two types of knobs. The controls for the load size and water temperature, called selector knobs, slide onto a rod. To remove them, gently pull the knob from the washing machine. If the knob resists your efforts, slide the end of a flathead screw driver under the knob and pry the knob away from the washing machine.

    Removing Timer Control Knobs

    • Timer control knobs on GE washing machines are held in place with a retaining clip located under the timer knob plate. To remove the timer control knob, unplug your washing machine and pull the timer knob to the "On" position. Look under the timer knob plate to locate the retaining clip. Turn the knob plate so the open end of the retaining clip faces away from you. Grasp the closed end of the retaining clip with a pair of needle-nosed pliers. Pull the clip free of the timer knob plate. The timer knob plate and timer knob now slip free of the rod with a gentle tug.

    Replacing Selector Knobs

    • Selector knobs contain an opening under the knob designed to fit over the rod that holds them in place. The opening is round with one flat side. Position the flat side of the opening to match the flat edge on the rod and slide the knob in place. These knobs do not require a retaining clip.

    Replacing the Timer Knob

    • New timer knob plates come equipped with the retaining clip in place. Position it over the rod, aligning the opening to the shape of the rod, and push the knob into position. The retaining clip prevents you from accidentally pulling the knob off the rod as you adjust your wash cycle.
