How to Replace a Pump in a Whirlpool Front Loader

Error codes and a puddle of water in your Whirlpool front-load washer could be a sign of a failed pump. The pump works during the spin cycle to move water out of the tub quickly. The pump is easily accessible and, by replacing it yourself, you can save the hundreds of dollars that a technician would charge you.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Whirlpool front loader to prevent accidental shocks during the pump replacement.

    • 2

Remove the three Phillips-head screws under the front edge of the washer. Pull down on the service panel to release it from the washer.

    • 3

Place a shallow pan under the front edge of the washer, directly under the pump cleanout. Turn the pump cleanout cover counterclockwise until you can pull it out of the pump assembly. Approximately 1 quart of water will come out of the pump assembly.

    • 4

Lift the door on the motor covering the wiring connector, and unplug the connector from the back of the pump. Remove the screw holding the pump assembly to the frame of the washer.

    • 5

Lift the pump and pull it out through the front of the washer to access the drain hoses.

    • 6

Squeeze the spring clamp holding one of the drain hoses to the pump outlet with a pair of pliers, and slide the clamp back up the hose. Repeat this process on the other drain hose. Slide the blade of a flat-head screwdriver between the drain hose and the pump outlet to break the seal so you can remove the hose. Pull on the hose, while twisting it slightly, until it comes off the pump outlet. Remove the other hose in the same manner.

Slide the drain hoses over the pump outlets on a replacement pump. Squeeze the spring clamps and slide them down until they hold the hoses firmly on the outlets. Place the pump in the mounting location, and insert the screw in the mounting hole. Tighten the screw with a screwdriver until the pump is secure. Connect the wires to the terminal on the back of the pump. Place the service panel on the washer, and insert and tighten the three mounting screws.
