How to Adjust the Sensor on a Whirlpool Dryer

The Whirlpool Corporation takes measures to help all dryer owners get satisfactory results, although experiences can greatly differ from user to user. The design and placement of the controls that help you adjust the sensors can vary greatly from model to model. Whirlpool's entire product listing page for their dryers places them in two general categories concerning the method for adjusting these settings -- traditional and modern. As you look at your dryer's control panel, you can probably use one of two general techniques to help you understand and manually adjust the automatic sensors.

Instructions

  1. Traditional Dryers with Knobs

    • 1

Turn the cycle selector knob towards the automatic sensor feature that is available on your Whirlpool dryer model. Some traditional models have the "AccuDry" feature that can automatically sense moisture in the load of wet clothes.

    • 2

Turn the "Temperature" knob to a setting that you want the dryer to use. Choices might include "Air Dry," "Low," "Medium" and "High." For example, if you are having difficulty drying a load of towels, consider using the highest temperature setting.

    • 3

Push the "Start" button to begin the automated drying cycle, which now includes adjustments that you made to the temperature. For the towel example, the AccuDry feature senses the amount of moisture in the towels and then automatically shuts off after reaching a pre-programmed dryness level.

    Modern Dryers with Push Buttons

    • 4

Press the control panel button, or turn the cycle selector knob towards the option that automatically senses the clothes as they are drying. Modern models of Whirlpool dryers include the "Eco Auto" cycle that helps owners cut down on electrical expenses. Unlike traditional dryers, you can't alter the preset temperature using this cycle, although you can adjust the dryness level.

    • 5

Press the "Dryness Level For Auto Cycles" button on the control panel. Each press of the button lights up a different level. Choices might include "More Dry," "Normal Dry" and "Less Dry." Using the wet towel example, many dryer users set the temperature to the highest setting to get maximum drying results. However, if you are looking to reign in or reduce your electricity bill, then you may want to let the Whirlpool dryer's "Eco Auto" cycle automatically select the best temperature.

    • 6

Press the "Start/Pause" button to begin the cycle. The dryer will use the presets (Eco Auto) but also include the manual adjustments that you chose (More Dry).
