How to Check the Door Switch Actuator on a Samsung Dryer

Samsung dryers are built with a door switch consisting of an actuator lever that closes the circuit when the door is shut. Opening the door releases the actuator, which cuts the circuit and stops the appliance. This is a safety feature. If the Samsung does not operate when the door is latched, try troubleshooting the actuator and switch to determine if these parts are defective. Use a multimeter to test the switch for electrical continuity.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Samsung power cord from the socket.

    • 2

Open the dryer door to press and release the actuator lever near the top. If the lever does not pop back when you release pressure, the actuator is bad and must be replaced, along with the switch assembly. If the lever pops back normally, continue troubleshooting.

    • 3

Remove the screw in the mounting plate next to the actuator lever. Now you can pull the actuator and switch assembly out of the mounting hole in the Samsung. Pull gently to prevent the two wires on the back from slipping off and falling inside.

    • 4

Pull the two wires off the switch, holding hte metal connector at the end of each wire. Secure the wires to the front of the Samsung with a piece of adhesive tape.

    • 5

Attach the clips on the end of the multimeter to the two posts on the back of the actuator switch where the wires were connected.

    • 6

Dial the multimeter selector control to the X1 setting. Press the test button and check the display. The needle or digital display will swing to the infinity range if the switch and actuator are operating normally. Pressing the actuator lever to the closed position will cause the multimeter to register zero with normal operation. Any other reading means the switch and actuator assembly are defective.
