My Maytag Performa Is Making a Loud Noise During Agitation

The Maytag Performa is a front-loading dryer. The dryer tumbles the clothes inside to force the hot air through the clothes, which aids in the drying process. Noises are normal during the drying cycles on a Maytag Performa. Noises from the dryer timer advancing as well as noise from the air moving quickly through the system are common. Loud, grinding noises and other peculiar noise may be due to a mechanical issue.
  1. Foreign Objects

    • A loud squeal, like the kind metal on metal makes, may be due to foreign object in the dryer tumbler. Check for coins or other objects commonly left in clothes pockets inside the dryer tumbler and along the dryer door. Remove the objects from the dryer and test the unit for further noise.

    Improper Installation

    • A Maytag Performa dryer needs to be installed on an even, solid surface. A machine that's not level will rattle or slide as the dryer agitates. Adjust the dryer legs with a wrench to level out the machine. Check the floor underneath the dryer too, as hollow flooring or old flooring may squeak or make loud noise as the dryer runs on top of it.

    Removing the Cabinet

    • The belt of the Maytag Performa runs around the motor, the idler pulley and the flywheel on the motor. An old belt as well as a sticking idler pulley will cause loud noise from the machine. You need to remove the dryer cabinet to access the belt. Slide a putty knife under each end of the dryer top to release the springs. Lift up the cabinet top. Remove the screws from the cabinet front. Pull the front forward and disconnect any wiring attached.

    Checking the Belt

    • Tug on the belt once the cabinet is removed. It should have a small amount of slack but shouldn't come off the pulleys easily. Replace a belt that's dry, cracked or broken. Spin the wheel of the idler pulley and listen for squeaking. Oil the idler pulley with lubricating oil if there's a squeak. Reassemble your Maytag Performa and test the unit.
