How to Repair a Whirlpool Washer'sTub Instability

Banging noises from your Whirlpool washer often indicate an unstable or off-balance tub caused by a large load of laundry. A washer should be level after installation, so all four of the legs touch the floor and hold the appliance steady. You might need to re-level the washer if it has been moved to a new location or if the floor below the appliance has been changed.

Things You'll Need

  • Spirit level

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a spirit level parallel with the front of the washing machine once the appliance has been placed in its final location. Make a note of where the bubble floats in the vial. Place the spirit level parallel with one of the sides and take a second reading from the level.

    • 2

Move the washer forward a few inches and tip it back onto its rear legs. Place a wooden block under the front of the washer to keep the front legs off the ground.

    • 3

Raise or lower the front corners of the appliance by turning the legs with an adjustable wrench based on the spirit level reading. Turning a leg clockwise lowers the corner; turning it counterclockwise raises it. Raise the right side if the bubble was too far left; raise the left side if the bubble was too far right.

    • 4

Raise or lower both the front legs equal amounts to adjust the balance between the front and back of the appliance. Raise both legs if the bubble floated nearest the back of the washer when the level was placed parallel with one of the sides; lower the front legs if the bubble was nearest the front of the washer.

    • 5

Lower the appliance back onto its legs and measure it with a spirit level again. Make any necessary additional changes to the legs and slide the washer back into position. Push down on top of the appliance; it should not wobble from side-to-side or front-to-back.
