How to Replace the CCU in a Whirlpool Frontloader Washer

Nearly every function of your Whirlpool front-load washer is monitored and controlled by the Central Control Unit. The CCU is the brains of your washer, and can cause a variety of problems if it fails. Because of its complexity, the CCU is one of the more expensive components on your washer. If you have to replace the CCU in a Whirlpool front-load washer, you can save some money by doing it yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Remove the three hex-head screws holding the top panel to the washer. The screws are located along the top edge of the back panel of the washer. Lift the back edge of the panel, slide the panel toward the rear of the washer, and lift it off the chassis.

    • 3

Locate the CCU on the back of the washer chassis. The CCU is a white plastic unit with various cables and wires connected to it. Note the location of the wires and cables connected to the CCU, then unplug them.

    • 4

Lift the mounting tabs along the top of the CCU, and slide it forward to remove it from the frame.

    • 5

Slide a replacement CCU onto the frame, locking the tabs into the slots in the frame. Connect the cables and wires to the correct terminals on the CCU.

    • 6

Place the top panel on the washer, and slide it toward the front of the washer until it locks into place. Install and tighten the three retaining screws along the back edge of the panel.
