How to Replace the Clutch on a Maytag MAV9600 Washing Machine

The Maytag MAV9600 is a top-load washing machine. When the MAV9600 starts its cycle, the internal motor turns on. A clutch on the motor prevents it from starting too fast, which would damage the motor. If your motor isn't functioning, it could be the result of a bad clutch. If you aren't intimidated by working with large home appliances, you can replace the clutch yourself.

    • 3

Open the top door of the washer and remove the top of the center agitator by pulling up on the lock ring at the top of the agitator. Remove the agitator cap by lifting it off.

    • 4

Remove the bolt and washer in the center of the agitator base with a socket wrench.

    • 5

Lift the agitator assembly out of the unit.

    • 6

Turn the machine on its side so you have access to the underside of the unit. The motor assembly will be visible in the center.

    • 7

Unsnap the metal pump clips from the pump assembly. Remove the pump assembly from the motor shaft.

    • 8

Unplug the motor wiring harness from the side of the motor.

    • 9

Remove the bolts holding the gear case to the base with a socket wrench. Pull the motor and gear case assembly out of the housing. The circular metal clutch will now be visible on the gear case shaft.

    • 10

Slide the metal washer off of the gear case shaft.

    • 11

Pop the retainer ring, located on top of the clutch, off with the tip of a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 12

Slide the clutch off of the shaft.

    • 13

Slide the new clutch assembly onto the shaft and replace the components in the reverse order you took them off.
