My GE Profile HydroWave Washer Has a Mildew Smell

Bleach

• Turn your GE Profile Hydrowave washer to its hottest water and full-cycle setting. Open the unit’s lid and allow it to fill completely with water before turning it off. Pour 1 cup of chlorine bleach into the washer and swish it around with your gloved hand or wooden spoon. Allow the bleach to remain in the washer for at least 30 minutes before closing the lid and letting the machine run through all cycles. Repeating this process monthly prevents future mold growth.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

• Create a paste of one-quarter cup white vinegar and one-half cup baking soda. Stir the ingredients and add more baking soda if the paste is too runny. Load a plastic-bristled scrub brush with the paste. Scrubbing down the metal drum’s inner walls removes the mold and mildew. Wipe away the excess paste with a damp cloth. Running the washer through the final rinse cycle on a hottest setting removes the remaining residue.

Fabric Softener Dispenser

• Mold and mildew odors can lurk inside the GE Profile Hydrowave’s fabric softener dispenser. Eliminate these odors with a mixture of 2 tablespoons chlorine bleach and 3 cups lukewarm water. Slip on a pair of rubber gloves and wipe down the fabric softener dispenser’s inner walls on top of the agitator. Continue wiping the fabric softener dispenser until all remaining residue and soap scum are removed. Wipe down the fabric dispenser with a separate damp cloth.

Prevent Mildew Odor

• Avoid leaving your damp clothes in the washer prevents mold and mildew formation. Keep the washer’s lid open when not in use and after every washing cycle. Wiping down the inner metal drum with a soft cloth after each use removes the remaining moisture.
