How to Fix a Frigidaire Washer That is Not Agitating

Agitation, the action a top-load washer makes using the column in the center of the drum, is essential to removing dirt from clothes. If your top-load Frigidaire washer is unable to agitate, you will find cycles fail to start or automatically cancel before the end. Investigating the cause of the problem involves examining several parts of the washer for signs of a fault. In some cases, an error in programming the cycle can give the impression that the agitator is faulty. Don't get agitated with your agitator – investigate.

Follow the washing machine's power cord to the outlet, and make sure the plug is firmly positioned in the outlet. Check the fuses or breakers protecting the washing machine's outlet. If one or both of the fuses or breakers have been tripped, you will find the washer is unable to start a wash. Separate fuses and breakers often protect the motor and controls. Call for repair if the appliance repeatedly blows fuses or trips breakers.

Examine the hot and cold water pipes, as a kink or twist in the line could prevent the appliance from filling with water before it is able to agitate. Straighten out the water lines, and double-check that the shut-off valves are turned to the "On" or "Open" position. Close the shut-off valve and unscrew the water pipes with the help of a pair of pliers if necessary. Just inside each pipe is a metal screen designed to catch debris before it enters the appliance. Wipe out any accumulations, replace the pipe and try the washer again.

Select the wash cycle again, making sure to choose the correct option for your clothes. Pull out the cycle dial or press "Start" to begin cleaning. Be careful not to choose a soak cycle that involves very little or no agitation. Some cycles do not agitate straight away, so be patient. Open and close the lid if it is not closed properly.

Take some of the clothes out of the drum. Heavy blankets, duvets, curtains and other upholstery can become too heavy for the motor to safely turn when they are saturated with water. Try to balance out the wash with one or two large items as well as some smaller pieces. Avoid placing all of the weight on one side of the drum or packing items against the agitator.

Let the motor cool down for half an hour, as it might have overheated as a result of excess weight in the drum. Turn the appliance off. Wait and try starting a cycle after the necessary time has elapsed. The washer automatically detects overheating and kills the motor to prevent damage. The motor is ready for use after 30 minutes have elapsed.
