How Do I Lubricate My Gas Dryer That Squeaks?

Gas dryers use a belt as well as a series of pulleys to spin the tub. The dryer will make noise as the unit spins. Over time, the pulleys begin to wear out and squeak. Not all squeaks mean the pulleys are heading toward the grave; they may simply need lubrication. Lubricating your dryer every year will prevent unnecessary wear to the pulleys and prevent the need for replacement. Always use 30-weight oil, never a penetrating oil such as DW-40.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dryer from the power source.

    • 2

Push down on the clips on the underside of the top panel with a screwdriver to release the top panel from the dryer.

    • 3

Remove the screws that go down the front panel of the unit. Remove the front of the dryer.

    • 4

Pull on the dryer belt and remove it from the drum. Remove the screws from inside the drum and pull the drum out of the unit to expose the pulleys underneath.

    • 5

Wipe off the pulley wheels that the belt rolls along. Drop two to three drops of oil onto the pulley shaft to lubricate it.

    • 6

Reassemble the dryer and test it for squeaks. Allow it to run a while so the oil gets a chance to penetrate the pulley.
