How to Switch Sides of the Door With a Whirlpool Duet

The direction of the door on your Whirlpool Duet dryer can be reversed to make the appliance easier to use in a broader range of locations. You might find the door hits cabinets, walls, or other appliances positioned next to the dryer in its current position. Reversing the swing mainly focuses on adapting the door; the body of the appliance is designed to accommodate the door in either position and requires very few changes.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the four screws holding the door to the front of the dryer while supporting the weight of door with your free hand. Place the door and hinge inside up on top of the towel to protect the outer surface from scratches.

    • 2

Look down at the inside of the dryer door with the hinge to the left and the bottom pointing toward you. Remove the Phillips head screws at 12, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 o'clock and place them to one side. Keep the other screws in place.

    • 3

Lift the inner part of the door up and place it to one side. Separate the outer part of the door into two pieces by turning the inner section clockwise to disengage the locking tabs. Flip the inner ring 180 degrees, place it back inside the outer part of the door and turn it counterclockwise to lock.

    • 4

Pry up the plastic plug strips on the opposite side of the door to the hinge and set them aside. Remove the retaining plug covering the holes for the door hinge on the side of the door and place it with the strips. Remove the screws holding the hinge to the door and screw it in place on the opposite side. Push the plastic plug strips and retaining plug in the holes vacated by the hinge.

    • 5

Put the inner part of the door back in place and tighten the six screws around the outside. At the front of the dryer, pry up the plastic strip on the opposite side of the door hole to the metal strike plate and set it to one side. Remove the screw holding the strike in place and attach it to the opposite side of the door opening. Push the plastic strip in the hole now vacated by the strike.

    • 6

Hold the door in position over the hinge holes on the opposite side of the door opening and tighten the screws removed in step 1 back in place. The door opens in the opposite direction now; make sure it clicks shut properly.
