How to Check the Drainage in a Washer

The washing machine inner tub where the clothes get cleaned fills and drains multiple times during a wash cycle. A pump is responsible for draining all of the water out between fills. Occasionally a clog can hinder drainage. Other times a bad pump or frozen pulley can prevent proper drainage. Proper troubleshooting will help check the cause of the drainage problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the washer to a normal run cycle and run the washer.

    • 2

Wait until the washer is finished its cycle.

    • 3

Open the lid and inspect the inner tub. If water was still in the tub, you have a drainage problem with the washer.

    • 4

Inspect the small space between the inner tub and the outer tub inside the washer. Occasionally small clothing can get stuck between the tubs and block the drainage. Remove the clothing and turn on the washer to see whether the water drains. If the water remains, proceed to Step 5.

    • 5

Unplug the washer. Locate the drain pipe or tube running out of the back of the washer. Turn off the washer water supply valves. Pull the tube off the washer and inspect for any stuck fabric or debris. Pull out any debris with the tweezers or pliers.

    • 6

Reconnect the drain tube. Turn the washer on and run a short cycle. If the washer does not drain fully, proceed to Step 7.

    • 7

Unplug the washer again. Find the lower access panel. Depending on your make and model, the access panel might be on the lower back or lower front. Unscrew the holding screws and remove the panel.

    • 8

Locate the drain tube running from the tub to the pump. Disconnect the tube from the tub and carefully inspect it for any clogs or stuck clothing. Note that some water may leak out. Pull out the clog and reconnect the tube. Replace the access panel and plug the washer back in.

Look inside the washer tub to check the water level. If the water level is still high, empty some of the water out with a cup. Plug the washer back in and run a short cycle. If the washer still does not drain, the pump or pump pulley is damaged and needs replacement.
