How to Install a Drain Pump on a GE Washer

The GE washing machine is a quality appliance that will serve you many years with proper maintenance. Parts can and will wear out, however, and will need to be replaced. When the pump on your GE washer fails, it will not drain the water from the washtub. Making repairs to your GE washing machine yourself can save you a great deal of money since labor rates for repair technicians are high. The average do-it-yourselfer can manage this repair easily. Replacing the pump only requires a few basic tools and about 30 minutes of your time.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet. Slide the putty knife between the front panel and the top of the GE washer to release the retaining clips. Pull the front panel away from the machine after you release the clips.

    • 2

Locate the drain pump in the lower part of the washer on the right side. Unplug the wires from the pump motor. Remove the motor mounting bolts using a socket and ratchet.

    • 3

Raise the pump up slightly and release the hose clamps using a pair of channel lock pliers. Pull the hoses off the pump. Remove the pump from the machine and discard it.

    • 4

Put the new pump into the GE washing machine and connect the hoses using a pair of channel-lock pliers to move the hose clamps into place. Install the pump mounting screws using a socket and ratchet.

Place the front panel on the machine bottom first to engage the hooks. Push the panel into place at the top until the retaining clips lock. Plug the power cords into the washer and run it for a short cycle while empty to test the new pump.
