Repairing Broken Water Pipe Fixtures on a Washing Machine

The water pipe fixtures on many washing machines are manufactured of a hard resin plastic, molded with threads to connect with the supply hoses for hot and cold water. The two fixtures extend from the back of the appliance and can break or crack if struck by a hard object. A washer sliding in the back of a moving van or truck, for example, is susceptible to this type of damage. Because the fixtures are permanently attached to the water inlet valve, the only repair for this type of problem is the replacement of the entire valve assembly.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power cord from the wall socket.

    • 2

Turn the knobs clockwise on the faucets in the laundry room where the hoses connect to the washer.

    • 3

Remove the two hoses from the pipe fixtures on the back of the washer, using pliers. If the fixture is broken off inside one of the hoses, which is no longer attached to the appliance, skip this step.

    • 4

Remove the access plate around the two pipe fixtures, taking out the screws with a screwdriver.

    • 5

Disconnect the two wires attached to the valve assembly at the top or on the side, depending on your model. Each wire pulls off a metal contact on the valve assembly.

    • 6

Compress the clamp on the hose attached to the valve, using pliers. Pull off the hose.

    • 7

Remove the screws holding the valve assembly to the mounting plate inside the washer. Take out the part.

    • 8

Secure the new part to the mounting plate with the screws.

    • 9

Squeeze the clamp with pliers and slide the hose onto the nozzle on the new valve.

    • 10

Slide the connectors on the two wires onto the contacts on the valve assembly.

    • 11

Fit the two holes in the access plate over the two pipe fixtures on the new valve. Secure the access plate with the screws.

    • 12

Attach the two supply hoses to the threaded connectors on the pipe fixtures and tighten with pliers.

    • 13

Twist the knobs on the faucets to the left to release the water through the hoses.

    • 14

Plug in the washer power cord.
