How to Install a Thermal Fuse in a Kenmore Dryer

The thermal fuse in a Kenmore dryer monitors the temperature of the heating element. If the element heats up beyond the rated capacity of the thermal fuse, the circuit breaks and the heating element shuts off due to lack of electrical current. The thermal fuse is designed to close when it cools down so the unit can resume normal operation. However, if the fuse is burned out, it must be replaced before the appliance can heat up. Buy a new thermal fuse either from Sears, which carries the Kenmore brand, or an appliance repair shop.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Kenmore power cord from the electrical socket.

    • 2

Loosen the screw in the metal band holding the ventilation hose to the pipe on the bottom of the Kenmore's back cover. Take off the hose.

    • 3

Unscrew and remove the slotted bolts holding the back cover to the edges of the cabinet by using the screwdriver.

    • 4

Pull off the back cover to find the thermal fuse on the top left edge of the heater-element casing. The casing is oblong, mounted vertically and on the lower left side of the appliance.

    • 5

Grip the metal connectors on the ends of the two wires clipped to the thermal fuse by using needle nose pliers. Pull off the connectors from the fuse terminals to disconnect the wires.

    • 6

Remove the screws in the metal plate that holds the thermal fuse. Pull off this plate and the attached fuse.

    • 7

Set the new thermal fuse in position in the same orientation as the old fuse. Secure the new part to the heater case with the two screws.

    • 8

Attach the two wires to the terminals on the new thermal fuse. Push the connectors on firmly so they cannot fall off.

    • 9

Secure the back cover to the appliance cabinet using the slotted bolts and screwdriver.

    • 10

Slide the ventilation hose onto the dryer pipe and secure it by tightening the screw in the metal band around the hose.

    • 11

Plug in the Kenmore's electrical cord.
