How to Replace the Belt in the GE Top Loader Washer

Top-loading washers have a drive belt attached to the motor's flywheel and the washer's idler pulley. As the motor runs, the belt turns the washer tub back and forth. After several years of use, the belt starts to wear, crack and eventually break. Changing a drive belt can be done at a fraction of the cost if you do the repair yourself. Contact GE or a reputable parts reseller for a new belt. Always use the correct size for your model.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washer from the wall.

    • 2

Remove the screws from the back panel of the washer and pull the panel out toward you. Locate the washer motor in the lower left side.

    • 3

Loosen the screw on one of the couplers on the motor housing to relieve tension from the belt. Pull the old belt away from the motor and from around the washer tub.

    • 4

Route the new belt in the same orientation as the old one. Replace the back panel, plug the unit in and test.
