Reasons for a Squeaky Maytag Electric Dryer

Maytag dryers are not the most silent of appliances. The heating element makes a clicking sound when shutting on and off. The tumbler makes noise as it spins. However, your dryer shouldn't be a large nuisance. Loud squeaking from the dryer can be caused by installation problems, issues with the belts or faulty pulleys on the inside of the machine. Troubleshooting all issues will help you determine whether the issue requires a serious repair.
  1. Proper Loading

    • Your washer can only handle so much of a load before it begins to preform improperly. Offset loads or loads that are too large can cause the washing machine to shake or the tub inside the unit to rub, causing a squealing noise. Open the unit and redistribute the clothes. Coins or other metal objects inside clothes pockets may make your dryer squeak as well. Always check your clothes before putting them into the machine.

    Level Machine

    • A machine that is not level will put the washer tub off balance, putting an extra load on the belts and pulleys of the machine. This will cause a squealing from the unit. Make sure the dryer is on a level surface with the legs adjusted properly. You can adjust the legs using a wrench and a level. The unit should sit even from front to back to prevent squealing.

    Faulty Belt

    • Belt-driven Maytag washers may squeal if the belt is old and worn. You need to remove the cabinet (or outer housing) from the unit by removing the screws and the control panel. This method will differ depending on the dryer model. Reference your owner's manual for instructions on how to remove the cabinet. Locate the belt once the cabinet is removed. The belt runs along the outside of the dryer drum and through the pulleys. If it looks worn, use the replacement diagram on the motor to replace it.

    Faulty Pulleys

    • Bad belt pulleys will also squeak. Spin the wheels of the pulley once the belt is removed and listen for squeaks. Spray a bit of penetrating oil in the wheel axle to stop any squeaking. If the wheel refuses to move you may need to replace the pulley entirely.
